How to Rank in AI Overviews: Show Up in Google's AI Answers (and Track It)

By Aaron CarmenUpdated September 30, 20264 min read

Quick answer

Google says there's no special optimization for AI Overviews. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and able to show a snippet in Google Search. From there, the same SEO basics apply: helpful content, crawlable pages, good page experience and an up-to-date Business Profile. Search Console counts AI Overview clicks in normal web search data, so tracking needs a tool or manual checks.

How to rank in AI Overviews comes down to something Google says plainly: there’s no special trick. To appear as a link in an AI Overview, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. There are no extra technical requirements. After that, the same SEO fundamentals that help you in normal results are what help you here.

That’s good news, because it means you’re not chasing a separate system. Below is what Google says matters, what to improve, and the part most guides skip: how to actually track whether you’re showing up.

How AI Overviews work

Google’s guidance describes AI Overviews as a way to get the gist of a complicated question quickly, with links to explore. A few points matter for site owners:

  • They don’t show for everything. Google says AI Overviews only appear when its systems decide they add something beyond classic search, and they often don’t trigger.
  • They pull from many pages. AI Overviews and AI Mode can run several related searches behind the scenes, which Google calls “query fan-out”, and show a wider set of supporting links than a normal results page.
  • AI Mode is different. It’s for longer, exploratory questions and may use different models, so the links can differ from AI Overviews.

What Google says it takes

To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must:

  1. Be indexed in Google Search.
  2. Be eligible to show a snippet, which means you haven’t blocked snippets with nosnippet or similar controls.
  3. Meet Google Search’s technical requirements, which every page needs anyway.

Google also lists the SEO fundamentals that “continue to be worthwhile”:

  • Crawling allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting setup.
  • Content that’s easy to find through internal links.
  • A good page experience.
  • Important content available as text, not only in images.
  • High-quality images and videos that support the text.
  • Structured data that matches the visible text on the page.
  • An up-to-date Business Profile and, for shops, Merchant Center.

How to optimize for AI Overviews in practice

Since AI Overviews answer questions, pages that answer questions clearly have the best chance of being linked.

  • Answer the question near the top. Put a direct, plain-language answer in the first paragraph, then explain. That’s why every guide on this site opens with a quick answer.
  • One topic per page. A page that clearly covers one question is easier to cite than a page that mixes ten.
  • Use headings that match real questions. “How much does a roof replacement cost in Denver?” is clearer than “Pricing”.
  • Keep facts current and sourced. Outdated details are a reason not to cite you.
  • For local businesses, keep your Business Profile accurate. Google’s own list includes it.

Mistakes that keep you out

  • Snippet controls left on. A stray nosnippet tag, or a very low max-snippet value, makes a page ineligible.
  • Pages that aren’t indexed. Check important pages with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
  • Key information only in images or PDFs. Google asks for important content in text form.
  • Structured data that doesn’t match the page. Google says it should match the visible text.
  • A security plugin or CDN blocking Googlebot. Google calls out hosting and CDN settings specifically.

How to track AI Overviews

This is where it gets awkward. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console’s normal data, in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. They aren’t broken out separately, so Search Console can’t tell you directly which clicks came from an AI Overview.

You have three options, from free to paid.

1. Search Console: watch question queries

Search Console can still show you the trend for the kinds of searches that tend to trigger AI Overviews.

  1. Open Performance, search type Web.
  2. Add a Query filter, choose Custom (regex), and enter: ^(how|what|why|when|which|can|does|is|should)\b
  3. Compare the last three months with the previous period.
  4. Look at impressions and click-through rate for those question queries. If impressions hold but clicks fall, AI answers may be satisfying more of those searches before people click.

It’s not perfect, but it’s free and it uses Google’s own data.

2. A manual weekly check

For a small business, a simple log is often enough. Pick the ten questions your customers ask most and search them once a week.

AI Overview tracking log

Date | Query | AI Overview shown? (Y/N) | My site linked? (Y/N) | Competitors linked | Notes {date} | how much does a roof replacement cost in {city} | Y | N | {competitor} | Add a pricing page

Search in a private window, and note that results vary by location and device.

3. AI Overview tracking tools

If you need this at scale, several SEO platforms now track AI Overviews alongside normal rankings:

Tool What it tracks for AI Overviews
Semrush Position Tracking records your daily presence in AI Overviews for a keyword set you choose, and Organic Rankings shows which of your keywords trigger them
Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks mentions and citations in AI Overviews and other AI tools; there’s also a free AI Overviews tracker for spot checks
SE Ranking An AI Overviews tracker as part of its rank tracking, plus monitoring of AI Mode and other AI tools

All three are paid platforms beyond their free tools. If you already use one, start there rather than adding another.

What about ChatGPT and other AI tools?

AI Overviews are only part of AI search. ChatGPT, Perplexity and others build their answers differently, though the same basics help across all of them. My guide on how to rank in ChatGPT shows what ChatGPT cited when I tested real local questions.

The short version

There’s no separate AI Overview playbook. Be indexed, let Google show snippets, answer questions clearly, keep your Business Profile current, and build the strong local foundations covered in my local SEO guide for small businesses. If you’re planning a new site, building it for search from the start helps here too; see SEO-friendly web design.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need special markup or schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data still helps Google understand your pages, and Google says it should match the visible text on the page, but there's no special AI Overview markup to add.

Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Partly. Google says clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type, but they aren't shown separately. You can watch for changes on question-style queries, but to see exactly when you're cited, you need manual checks or a tracking tool.

How do I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?

Google says you can limit what's shown from your pages with the nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls, or noindex. These also affect your normal search snippets, so use them carefully. Blocking Google-Extended affects AI training and grounding in some other Google systems, not AI Overviews in Search.

Do AI Overviews show up for local searches?

They can, but Google says AI Overviews only appear when its systems decide they add something to classic search, so they often don't trigger. For local businesses, Google's guidance includes keeping your Business Profile up to date, which feeds the local information Google shows across Search.

What's the best AI Overviews tracker?

It depends on the tools you already use. Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking all now track AI Overview citations alongside normal rankings, and Ahrefs has a free AI Overviews tracker for spot checks. A small business can start with a manual weekly check of its ten most important questions.
