Aaron's take

Gyms have one of the largest local searches there is. "Gym near me" gets around 1.8 million searches a month in the US, and big chains appear among the top related searches. Independent gyms win on specialties and community, with boxing gyms, CrossFit and 24-hour access each getting large searches of their own.

The gyms that win online are clear about membership prices and what is included, show the space and equipment with real photos, explain classes and personal training, and offer a free trial or day pass. Searches peak in January, so new-year offers matter most. Five of the 7 most-reviewed gyms I checked also list personal trainer on their profile.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Membership and prices page

The first question. Be clear about prices and contracts.

  2. Free trial or day pass page

    An easy first step.

  3. Classes page

Schedules and class types bring in specific searches.

  4. Personal training page

Higher-value service with its own searches.

  5. Facility tour

Show equipment and space with real photos.

  6. Specialty pages

Boxing, strength or 24-hour access set you apart.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for gyms and fitness centers

Primary category
Gym
Secondary categories
Fitness centerPersonal trainerPhysical fitness program

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Gym as your primary category. Of the 7 most-reviewed US gyms I checked, 5 added Personal trainer and 4 added Fitness center.
  • Keep hours exact, including 24-hour access if you offer it.
  • Post photos of the space and classes often.
  • Promote new-year offers before January.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for gyms and fitness centers

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Gyms And Fitness Centers can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Health & Fitness category average $67.36 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes gyms and fitness centers make

  1. Hiding prices

Members compare. Show prices and contract terms.

  2. No trial offer

A free trial or day pass makes the first visit easy.

  3. Competing with chains on price

Compete on specialty and community instead.

  4. Missing January

Searches peak in January. Be ready with offers.

FAQ

Gym SEO questions

How can an independent gym compete with chains online?

With specialty, community and clear pricing. "Gym near me" gets about 1.8 million searches a month in the US, and chains compete hard for it. Specialty searches such as boxing gyms and CrossFit, each about 110,000, are where independents can stand out.

Can gyms use Local Services Ads?

Gym membership is not a Local Services Ads category on Google's US list, so paid search means regular Google Ads. Personal trainer is a category, so a gym offering training may appear there. SEO, reviews and your Google Business Profile are the main ways customers find you, and they keep bringing in enquiries without a cost per click.

Should gyms publish membership prices?

Yes. Price is the first thing people check, and hidden prices push them to the next gym on the map. Show membership options, what each includes and any contract terms, and offer a free trial or day pass to make the first visit easy.

When do people search for gyms?

In the US, gym searches peak in January and are lowest from September to November. New-year offers, promoted from December, catch the biggest wave, and a smaller rise in early summer is worth a second push. Keep a simple, low-pressure trial offer running all year for people who start at other times.

How much does SEO cost for a gym?

There is no single price. The main factors are your local competition, the number of memberships and locations you want to show up for, and how much your current site needs fixing. Monthly work suits most gyms, since rankings keep improving with new content and reviews. I give a fixed quote after reviewing your site and competitors.
