Aaron's take

General practice and multi-practice law firms face a different SEO problem from specialists. Searches like "law firm", "lawyers near me" and "attorney near me" are large, around 74,000, 49,500 and 49,500 a month in the US, but the people behind them want a specific kind of help. The related searches show it: accident lawyer, divorce lawyer, immigration lawyer.

The firms that win online build a strong page for each practice area, almost as if each were its own specialist site, and use the general firm page to link them together. A homepage that tries to rank for everything usually ranks for nothing. Reviews that mention the practice area help each one rank.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A full page for each practice area

People search for the help they need. Each practice area needs its own strong page.

  2. Attorney profiles

Show which lawyer handles which kind of case, with experience and background.

  3. Office location pages

Each office needs its own page and Google Business Profile.

  4. Free consultation page

People search for free legal advice. Explain what your first meeting includes.

  5. FAQ pages for each practice area

Common questions bring in people at the research stage.

  6. Results and reviews page, following bar rules

Trust matters. Show reviews and results with the disclaimers your state requires.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for law firms

Primary category

Secondary categories

What to get right

  • If no single practice area dominates, use Law firm as your primary category. If one does, such as personal injury, use that category instead, since it matches more searches.
  • Add a secondary category for each practice area you really handle.
  • Most state bars have advertising rules covering testimonials, past results and specialist claims. Check yours before publishing case results or client reviews.
  • Ask clients to mention the type of help they received in their reviews.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for law firms

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Avvo
  • Yelp
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Law Firms can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Litigation lawyer

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Attorneys & Legal Services category average $131.63 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes law firms make

  1. Ranking everything from the homepage

One page cannot rank for every practice area. Give each its own page.

  2. Thin practice pages

A short paragraph per area will not compete with specialist firms.

  3. Wrong primary category

If most of your work is one area, that category matches more searches than Law firm.

  4. Breaking advertising rules

Past results and testimonials are regulated. Follow your state bar rules.

FAQ

Law Firm SEO questions

How should a multi-practice law firm approach SEO?

Treat each practice area almost like its own specialist site. Build a strong page for each, with attorney profiles, FAQs and reviews that mention that type of case, and link them from your main firm pages. A homepage alone cannot rank for every kind of legal help.

Can law firms use Local Services Ads?

They can. Litigation lawyer is a US Local Services Ads category under professional services, and Google screens lawyers before ads go live. Many firms use the ads for fast leads and SEO for long-term visibility, with reviews supporting both. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

Should a law firm use Law firm as its Google category?

Only if no single practice area dominates. If most of your work is personal injury or family law, for example, use that category as primary, since it matches more searches. Add secondary categories for each practice area you really handle.

Do general searches like "lawyer near me" bring in clients?

Some, but most people behind them want specific help, such as an accident or divorce lawyer. The related searches show this. Strong practice area pages catch both the general and the specific searches, while reviews mentioning case types help each page rank.

How much does SEO cost for a law firm?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many practice areas and offices you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most law firms, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
