Aaron's take

Primary care patients are looking for a long-term relationship, and the first question is usually whether a practice is taking new patients. "Family doctor near me" and "primary care physician near me" each get about 49,500 searches a month in the US. Newer models are growing too, with concierge medicine at about 40,500 searches and direct primary care at about 18,100.

The primary care practices that win online say clearly whether they accept new patients, list insurance, show their providers, make booking easy and explain services from annual physicals to chronic care. Practices with a membership model need to explain clearly how it works and what it costs.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. New patients page

Say clearly whether you accept new patients and how to register.

  2. Insurance page

    Patients check coverage first.

  3. Provider profiles

Patients choose a doctor. Show who they are.

  4. Services page

Physicals, chronic care and preventive care.

  5. Membership page, if offered

Explain concierge or direct primary care clearly.

  6. Same-day and telehealth page

    Patients want quick access.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for primary care practices

Primary category
Family practice physician
Secondary categories
InternistMedical clinicPediatricianGeneral practitioner

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Family practice physician or Internist, depending on your practice. Of the 10 most-reviewed US family practices I checked, half added Internist and Pediatrician.
  • Create profiles for individual doctors where Google allows it.
  • Never confirm a patient's condition or treatment in review replies. Health privacy rules apply.
  • State in your description whether you are accepting new patients.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for primary care practices

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Healthgrades
  • Zocdoc
  • Yelp
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Primary Care Practices can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Primary care physician
  • The Google Verified badge is available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are not available, so ads only run once verification is complete.
  • Booking leads are not available for health care categories.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Physicians & Surgeons category average $40.04 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes primary care practices make

  1. Not saying if you take new patients

It is the first question. Answer it.

  2. Hidden insurance

    Coverage is checked first.

  3. Faceless content

    Patients choose doctors. Introduce them.

  4. Unclear membership pricing

Explain concierge and direct care costs.

FAQ

Medical SEO questions

What do people search for when choosing a primary care doctor?

A doctor near them who is taking new patients. In the US, "family doctor near me" and "primary care physician near me" each get about 49,500 searches a month. Saying clearly whether you accept new patients, and which insurance, wins them.

Can primary care practices use Local Services Ads?

They can. Primary care physician is one of Google's US Local Services Ads categories in the health care group. The badge is available once verified, while pre-badge ads and booking leads are not. Most practices get the best results running ads next to SEO. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

When do people search for primary care doctors?

In the US, primary care searches are highest in January and lowest in December. Make sure new patient and insurance pages are current before the new year. Many people also look for a new doctor after moving or changing jobs, so keep new patient information visible all year round.

How should concierge and direct primary care practices market themselves?

By explaining the model clearly. "Concierge medicine" gets about 40,500 searches a month in the US. Explain what the membership includes, what it costs and how it works with insurance, so patients can decide quickly. A simple comparison with traditional practices helps too.

How much does SEO cost for a primary care practice?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many services and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most primary care practices, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
