Aaron's take

Accounting firms see a sharp rush every tax season. Searches for "CPA near me" peak in February and drop to their lowest from May onwards, and the term gets about 74,000 searches a month in the US on average. Outside tax season, the searches are about business services: small business accounting, fractional CFO work and forensic accounting, at about 27,100 searches a month.

The accounting firms that win online separate individual tax work from business services, explain who they serve and what they charge, show their credentials and keep content working all year with pages for bookkeeping, payroll, advisory and planning. Seven of the 10 most-reviewed CPA firms I checked also list Tax preparation service on their profile.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Individual tax page

The seasonal rush. Explain what is included and how to start.

  2. Small business accounting page

Business owners search separately and stay all year.

  3. Advisory and fractional CFO page

Higher-value work with its own searches.

  4. Industry pages

Real estate, medical practices and contractors each have specific needs.

  5. Fees page

Explain how you charge, even in ranges.

  6. Team page with credentials

Clients want to know who handles their money.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for accountants and CPAs

Primary category
Certified public accountant
Secondary categories

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Certified public accountant if your firm is led by CPAs. Of the 10 most-reviewed US CPA firms I checked, 7 added Tax preparation service and 4 added Bookkeeping service.
  • Use Accountant instead if no CPA works at the firm.
  • Update hours for tax season, including evenings and weekends if you offer them.
  • Never discuss a client's finances in review replies.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for accountants and CPAs

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Better Business Bureau
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Accountants And CPAs can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Finance & Insurance category average $74.44 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes accountants and CPAs make

  1. Only marketing at tax time

Business services keep firms busy all year. Promote them.

  2. Mixing individuals and businesses

They search differently. Separate the pages.

  3. Hiding fees

Clients want a rough idea of cost before calling.

  4. Generic content

Industry pages show expertise other firms cannot match.

FAQ

Accounting SEO questions

When do people search for accountants?

In the US, "CPA near me" searches peak in February and stay near their lowest from May to December. Individual tax work drives the spike, so business services such as bookkeeping, payroll and advisory are what keep a firm's search traffic and income steady through the rest of the year.

Can accounting firms use Local Services Ads?

Not directly. Google's US Local Services Ads list has no category for accounting, so the paid option is regular Google Ads. Tax specialist is a category, so a firm doing tax work may appear there. That makes SEO, reviews and a strong Google Business Profile even more important for being found, since they keep bringing in enquiries without a cost per click.

Should accounting firms separate individual and business services?

Yes. Individuals usually want a tax return done quickly, while business owners want an ongoing relationship covering bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning and advice. Separate pages, with their own fees and calls to action, let each group find what they need without wading through the other.

Should accountants create industry pages?

Yes, for the industries you know well. Real estate investors, medical practices and contractors each have specific tax and accounting needs and often search with their industry name. A page for each shows expertise that general firms cannot match and brings in better-fit clients.

How much does SEO cost for an accounting firm?

It depends on how competitive your area is, how many services and locations you want to rank for and what your website needs first. Most accounting firms pay monthly, because new pages, reviews and local work need steady attention. I look at your site and the competitors near you first, then give you a fixed quote.
