Aaron's take

Bookkeeping is a year-round service, but searches still rise early in the year as owners get their books ready for tax season. "Bookkeeping services" gets about 18,100 searches a month in the US and "bookkeeper near me" about 14,800, and payroll services add about 12,100. Many owners also search for QuickBooks help and virtual bookkeeping.

The bookkeepers that win online explain what is included each month, publish clear monthly packages, name the software they use, offer catch-up and clean-up work for owners who are behind, and make it clear they work remotely if they do. Several of the most-reviewed bookkeeping businesses I checked also offer tax preparation and payroll.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Monthly bookkeeping packages page

Owners want predictable costs. Show what each package includes.

  2. Catch-up bookkeeping page

Owners who are behind need help fast, often before tax deadlines.

  3. Payroll page

    About 12,100 searches a month. A natural add-on.

  4. Software page

Owners search for QuickBooks and other tools. Say what you use.

  5. Virtual bookkeeping page

    Remote work widens your market.

  6. Industry pages

Restaurants, contractors and e-commerce each have specific needs.

What to get right

  • Use Bookkeeping service as your primary category. Of the 10 most-reviewed US bookkeeping businesses I checked, 4 added Accountant and Tax preparation service, and 3 added Payroll service.
  • Add tax categories only if you prepare returns.
  • Mention the software you use in your description.
  • Never discuss a client's finances in review replies.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for bookkeepers

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Bookkeepers can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Finance & Insurance category average $74.44 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes bookkeepers make

  1. Hourly pricing only

    Owners prefer predictable monthly packages.

  2. Ignoring catch-up work

Owners who are behind need help and pay well for it.

  3. Not naming software

Owners search for help with specific tools.

  4. Local-only thinking

If you work remotely, say so and reach more clients.

FAQ

Bookkeeping SEO questions

How do business owners search for bookkeepers?

Locally and by need. In the US, "bookkeeping services" gets about 18,100 searches a month and "bookkeeper near me" about 14,800. Owners also search for payroll, QuickBooks help and catch-up work, so a page for each service brings in owners at different stages and with different problems.

Can bookkeepers use Local Services Ads?

Not directly. Google's US Local Services Ads list has no category for bookkeeping, so the paid option is regular Google Ads. That makes SEO, reviews and a strong Google Business Profile even more important for being found, since they keep bringing in enquiries without a cost per click.

Should bookkeepers publish monthly packages?

Yes. Business owners like predictable costs, and packages based on transaction volume or number of accounts make the decision easy. Explain what each package includes, such as reconciliations and monthly reports, and what costs extra, such as payroll or catch-up work.

Should bookkeepers offer catch-up services?

Yes. Many owners fall behind and search for help when a tax deadline is near. A catch-up or clean-up page, explaining how you bring the books up to date and how you price it, brings in urgent work that often turns into a monthly client.

How much does SEO cost for a bookkeeping business?

There is no single price. The main factors are your local competition, the number of services and locations you want to show up for, and how much your current site needs fixing. Monthly work suits most bookkeepers, since rankings keep improving with new content and reviews. I give a fixed quote after reviewing your site and competitors.
