Aaron's take

Car buyers do most of their research online before they ever visit a lot. "Car dealerships near me" gets around 673,000 searches a month in the US, and "used cars for sale" and "used car dealerships near me" each get about 200,000 or more. Buyers compare inventory, prices, financing and trade-in values across several dealers.

The dealerships that win online have fast, accurate inventory pages, model and trim pages written for buyers, clear financing and trade-in tools, and a strong review profile. Most of the top-reviewed used car dealers also list Car dealer and the brands they sell. Service departments are a separate opportunity with their own searches.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Fast, accurate inventory pages

Buyers browse inventory first. Pages must load fast and stay up to date.

  2. Model pages for the brands you sell

Buyers research models and trims before visiting.

  3. Financing page

Explain options and let buyers apply online.

  4. Trade-in page

About 27,100 searches a month for trade-in value. Offer an estimate tool.

  5. Lease deals page

Lease shoppers search separately and compare monthly payments.

  6. Service department pages

Service brings regular visits and its own searches.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for car dealerships

Primary category
Used car dealer
Secondary categories
Car dealerUsed truck dealerMotor vehicle dealerCar finance and loan company

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use the category that fits your main business, such as a brand dealer category for franchised dealers or Used car dealer. Of the 10 most-reviewed US used car dealers I checked, 8 added Car dealer.
  • Create separate profiles for sales and service departments where Google allows it.
  • Post new arrivals and offers as updates.
  • Reply to every review, including ones about the service department.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for car dealerships

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • DealerRater
  • Cars.com
  • Yelp
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Car Dealerships can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Automotive (for sale) category average $44.26 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes car dealerships make

  1. Slow inventory pages

Buyers leave slow sites. Inventory must load fast.

  2. Out-of-date listings

Sold cars still online frustrate buyers. Keep inventory current.

  3. Hiding prices

Buyers compare. Clear prices bring visits.

  4. Ignoring service

The service department has its own searches and customers.

FAQ

Car Dealership SEO questions

How do car buyers search for dealerships?

Mostly locally and with a lot of research. In the US, "car dealerships near me" gets about 673,000 searches a month and "used cars for sale" about 246,000. Buyers compare inventory, prices and reviews before visiting, so fast, accurate inventory pages matter most.

Can car dealerships use Local Services Ads?

No. Car sales is not on Google's US Local Services Ads list. Auto repair shop is a category, so a dealer service department may appear there. Regular Google Ads are the paid option, while SEO, reviews and a complete Google Business Profile bring in customers without a cost per click, and keep working when ad budgets are paused.

What pages bring dealerships the most buyers?

Inventory pages, model and trim pages, financing and trade-in tools. Trade-in value alone gets about 27,100 searches a month in the US. Pages that help buyers work out their budget and trade-in bring them in ready to visit. Keep every tool simple and fast on a phone.

Should dealerships market their service department separately?

Yes. Service has its own searches and brings regular visits from people who may buy their next car from you. Separate service pages, online booking and a service profile where Google allows it all help. Service reviews also improve the rating buyers see.

How much does SEO cost for a car dealership?

There is no single price. The main factors are your local competition, the number of inventory and locations you want to show up for, and how much your current site needs fixing. Monthly work suits most dealerships, since rankings keep improving with new content and reviews. I give a fixed quote after reviewing your site and competitors.
