Aaron's take

The phrase "general contractor" is a trap for SEO. A large share of the searches behind it come from people checking licences, insurance and how to become one, not homeowners hiring. The homeowners searching for help usually type the project instead: home remodeling contractors, home addition contractors, a kitchen or a bathroom.

So the general contractors who win online build their sites around projects, not their title. A page for each type of job, a portfolio organized by project, and clear information about licensing, insurance and how you run a job. That is what a homeowner trusting you with their house needs to see.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each type of project

Homeowners search for the job, such as an addition or a remodel. Each project type needs its own page with photos.

  2. Portfolio organized by project type

People hiring a contractor want to see work like theirs. Tag each project by type and town.

  3. How we work page

Explain your process from estimate to handover: permits, schedules, communication and payments. It answers the questions that stop people calling.

  4. Licensing and insurance page

Many searches check a contractor's licence and insurance. Show yours plainly to build trust.

  5. Commercial work page, if you do it

Commercial clients search differently and care about timelines and safety records. Keep them separate from homeowners.

  6. Service area pages

Pages for your main towns, with projects completed there, help you show up locally.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for general contractors

Primary category
General contractor
Secondary categories

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use General contractor as your primary category. Among the 10 most-reviewed US general contractors I checked, half also listed Roofing contractor and Window installation service.
  • Add trade categories only for work your own crews really do, not everything you subcontract.
  • Post project photos with the project type and town in each description.
  • Ask for a review at handover, while the client is happiest with the result.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for general contractors

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Houzz
  • BBB
  • GuildQuality
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

General Contractors can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: General contractor
  • The Google Verified badge is available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are available while verification is pending.
  • Booking leads are available.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Home & Home Improvement category average $90.92 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes general contractors make

  1. Building the site around your job title

Many people searching "general contractor" are checking licensing or careers. Homeowners search for the project, so build pages for projects.

  2. A portfolio with no context

Photos without the project type, scope or town tell visitors little and give Google nothing to connect to searches.

  3. Listing every trade you subcontract

Categories and pages for work you do not do yourself bring the wrong leads and can confuse customers.

  4. Not showing licences and insurance

Homeowners want to know you are licensed and insured. If they cannot find it, they move on.

FAQ

Contractor SEO questions

Why is "general contractor" a hard keyword?

Because many of the people searching it are not hiring. Top related searches include contractor licences, insurance and how to become a general contractor. Homeowners usually search for the project instead, such as home remodeling or home addition contractors, so project pages bring in better leads.

Should a general contractor use Local Services Ads?

General contractor is a Local Services Ads category in the US, with the Google Verified badge, pre-badge ads and booking leads available. Ads bring leads within days, while SEO builds rankings that keep working without a cost per lead. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

What pages should a general contractor's website have?

A page for each type of project you do, a portfolio organized by project, a page explaining how you run a job, a licensing and insurance page, and pages for your main towns. Add a separate commercial page if you do commercial work.

Should a general contractor show prices?

Give typical ranges for common projects and explain what changes them, such as size, finishes and permits. Exact quotes still come after a site visit. Ranges help homeowners judge whether their budget fits before they call, which saves both sides time.

How much does SEO cost for a general contractor?

It depends on how competitive your area is, how many project types and towns you want to rank for and what your website needs first. Most general contractors pay monthly, because new pages, reviews and local work need steady attention. I look at your site and the competitors near you first, then give you a fixed quote.
