Aaron's take

When I rebuilt the website for Mr Mark Webb, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in London, traffic grew 516% in three months and new patients went from around 5 a week to 12. The site was organized around the conditions he treats, the procedures he offers and the places he works, and that structure did most of the heavy lifting.

Patients rarely search for "orthopaedic surgeon" on its own. They search for a body part and a problem: knee replacement, hip pain, ACL surgery, a shoulder that will not lift. A page for each condition and procedure, written clearly and backed by the surgeon's training and results, is what earns both the ranking and the referral.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each condition you treat

Patients search for their problem, such as knee arthritis or a torn ACL, long before they search for a surgeon.

  2. A page for each procedure

Knee replacement, hip replacement and ACL surgery each get tens of thousands of searches a month. Cover the operation, recovery and results.

  3. Surgeon profile pages

Patients choose a person. Training, board certification, specialties and real outcomes build the trust that turns a visit into a booking.

  4. Location pages for each clinic and hospital

Patients need to know where they will be seen. Each location page helps you rank in the map pack for that area.

  5. Sports injury page

Sports injuries bring in younger, active patients who search with urgency and often need fast appointments.

  6. Referral and insurance page

Explain whether patients need a referral and which insurers you work with. It answers the question that stops many from booking.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for orthopaedic surgeons

Primary category
Orthopedic surgeon
Secondary categories
Sports medicine clinicHand surgeonPhysical therapy clinicUrgent care center

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Orthopedic surgeon as your primary category. The most-reviewed US orthopaedic practices I checked add few secondaries, usually Sports medicine clinic, Hand surgeon or Physical therapy clinic.
  • Only add Physical therapy clinic or Urgent care center if you really offer those services on site.
  • Create a separate profile for each surgeon where Google allows it, as well as for each practice location.
  • Never confirm in a review reply that the reviewer is your patient. Thank them without mentioning treatment details.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for orthopaedic surgeons

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Healthgrades
  • WebMD
  • RateMDs
  • US News Health
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Orthopaedic Surgeons can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Orthopedic surgeon
  • The Google Verified badge is available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are not available, so ads only run once verification is complete.
  • Booking leads are not available for health care categories.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Physicians & Surgeons category average $40.04 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes orthopaedic surgeons make

  1. Organising the site around the surgeon instead of the patient

Patients search for their condition and the procedure. A site that only lists the surgeon's CV misses most of those searches.

  2. One "Services" page

Knee, hip, shoulder and hand problems each have their own searches and their own patients. Each needs its own page.

  3. Thin surgeon profiles

Training, board certification and outcomes are what patients compare. A two-line bio gives them nothing to choose you on.

  4. Revealing patient details in review replies

Confirming that a reviewer is a patient can break US privacy rules. Keep replies general and polite.

FAQ

Orthopedic SEO questions

How do patients search for an orthopaedic surgeon?

Mostly by body part and problem, such as knee replacement, hip pain or ACL surgery, then by location. Searches for "orthopedic surgeon near me" get about 33,100 a month in the US. A site with pages for each condition and procedure catches patients earlier, before they have chosen anyone.

Can orthopaedic surgeons use Local Services Ads?

Yes. Orthopedic surgeon is a Local Services Ads category in the US, under Google's health care rules. Booking leads and pre-badge ads are not available for health care, so ads only run once verification is complete. Reviews and a complete profile help both the ads and your map ranking.

What results can SEO bring an orthopaedic practice?

For Mr Mark Webb, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in London, a new site organized around conditions, procedures and locations grew traffic 516% in three months, reached #1 in the map pack and took new patients from about 5 a week to 12. Results depend on your market and starting point.

Should each surgeon have their own page?

Yes. Patients choose a person, not just a practice. A page for each surgeon with training, board certification, specialties, locations and the procedures they perform helps patients decide and helps Google connect the surgeon to the right searches. It also gives each surgeon a page to link from their hospital and professional profiles.

How much does SEO cost for an orthopaedic practice?

It depends on how many surgeons, locations and procedures you want to rank for, the competition in your area and what your site needs. Most practices pay monthly. I look at your site and the practices you compete with first, then give you a fixed quote.
