Aaron's take

Hair salons compete on looks, trust and booking convenience. "Hair salon near me" gets around 1.5 million searches a month in the US and "haircut near me" about 1.2 million. Service searches are big too: balayage at about 165,000, keratin treatment at about 60,500 and hair extensions near me at about 49,500.

The salons that win online have a page for each service with real photos, introduce stylists and their specialties, show prices or starting prices, and make online booking simple. Colour clients in particular choose by portfolio, so a strong gallery matters. Several of the top-reviewed salons also list lash, brow and nail services on their profile.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each service

Cuts, colour, balayage, keratin and extensions each have searches.

  2. Stylist profiles

Clients choose a stylist. Show their work.

  3. Prices page

    Starting prices help clients book.

  4. Gallery by service

    Colour clients choose by portfolio.

  5. Online booking page

Most clients book from their phone.

  6. New client page

Explain consultations and what to expect.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for hair salons

Primary category
Hair salon
Secondary categories
Beauty salonEyelash salonHairdresserNail salon

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Hair salon as your primary category. Of the 10 most-reviewed US hair salons I checked, 3 added Beauty salon and Eyelash salon.
  • Add other beauty categories only for services you offer.
  • Post photos of real colour and cuts every week.
  • Link your booking system to your profile.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for hair salons

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Hair Salons can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Hair salon
  • The Google Verified badge is not available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are available while verification is pending.
  • Booking leads are available.
  • This category is only available in California and Florida.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Beauty & Personal Care category average $39.25 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

  1. Weak photos

Clients choose by results. Show your best work.

  2. No prices

    Starting prices help clients book.

  3. Faceless salon

Clients choose a stylist. Introduce them.

  4. Hard booking

    Let clients book online.

FAQ

Salon SEO questions

How do clients search for hair salons?

Locally and by service. In the US, "hair salon near me" gets about 1.5 million searches a month, and balayage alone gets about 165,000. Service pages with real photos, stylist profiles and easy booking win clients who are comparing salons.

Can hair salons use Local Services Ads?

Only in California and Florida. Google lists Hair salon as a Local Services Ads category in those two states. Everywhere else, regular Google Ads are the paid option, which makes SEO and reviews even more important. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

Should hair salons publish prices?

At least starting prices. Clients compare, and colour services vary a lot. Starting prices for each service, with what affects the final price such as hair length, help clients book confidently and avoid surprises at the desk. Offer consultations for complex colour work so clients get an exact quote before booking.

How important are stylist profiles?

Very. Many clients choose a stylist, not a salon, and follow them. A profile for each stylist with their specialties and photos of their work helps new clients choose and makes booking with the right person simple. Include each stylist's booking link and specialties so clients can book the right person quickly.

How much does SEO cost for a hair salon?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many services and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most hair salons, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
