Aaron's take

Tour operators compete with big booking platforms for travellers who are planning trips. "Things to do near me" gets around 2.2 million searches a month in the US, and specific searches such as boat tours at about 49,500, food tours and walking tours at about 12,100 to 14,800 show what travellers want. Searches peak in July and are lowest in November.

The tour operators that win online have a page for each tour with photos, length, price and what is included, make direct booking easy, and write guides to the area that bring planning travellers to their site. Reviews matter heavily. Half of the most-reviewed tour operators I checked also list sightseeing tour agency on their profile.

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each tour

Show photos, length, price and what is included.

  2. Direct booking page

Save commission with easy direct booking.

  3. Private and group tours page

    Higher-value bookings.

  4. Local guide pages

Travellers planning trips search for things to do.

  5. FAQ page

Weather, accessibility and what to bring.

  6. Gift vouchers page

    Tours make good gifts.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for tour operators

Primary category
Tour operator
Secondary categories
Sightseeing tour agencyTour agencyTourist attraction

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Tour operator as your primary category. Of the 10 most-reviewed US tour operators I checked, half added Sightseeing tour agency and Tourist attraction.
  • Post photos from every tour, with guest permission.
  • Link your profile to your direct booking page.
  • Reply to all reviews, including on travel sites.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for tour operators

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Tripadvisor
  • Viator
  • Yelp
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Tour Operators can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Travel category average $44.70 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Structured data

Mistakes

Mistakes tour operators make

  1. Relying only on booking platforms

Commissions add up. Push direct booking.

  2. Thin tour pages

Travellers want photos, length, price and details.

  3. Ignoring reviews

    Travellers choose by reviews.

  4. Missing the planning stage

Local guides bring travellers before they book.

FAQ

Tour Operator SEO questions

How do travellers search for tours?

By activity and location. In the US, "things to do near me" gets about 2.2 million searches a month, and boat, food and walking tours each have their own searches. A detailed page for each tour, with photos and prices, brings travellers to your site.

Can tour operators use Local Services Ads?

No. Tours is not on Google's US Local Services Ads list. Regular Google Ads are the paid option, while SEO, reviews and a complete Google Business Profile bring in customers without a cost per click, and keep working when ad budgets are paused.

How can tour operators get more direct bookings?

With fast direct booking on your own site, a reason to book direct such as the best price or a perk, and strong local content. Booking platforms bring visibility but charge commission, so every direct booking improves your margins. Keep availability in sync across every channel.

When do people search for tours?

In the US, tour searches peak in July and are lowest from November to January, with the busiest month about 2.2 times the quietest. Tour pages, photos and offers should be ready by spring, when travellers start planning summer trips.

How much does SEO cost for a tour company?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many tours and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most tour operators, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
