Aaron's take

Otter Landscapes was sitting at #14 in Google Maps for "yard cleanup tualatin" when we started. Under 60 days later it was #1. Nothing about it was clever. We gave each service its own page, named the towns they actually work in, and used their own job photos instead of stock images.

The thing I tell every landscaper is to start before spring. Search demand in April and May is roughly three times what it is in December, and new pages take a few months to settle into the rankings. If you build them in March, you are fixing your website during your busiest weeks instead of answering the phone.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each service, starting with your most profitable work

Retaining walls, patios, landscape design and lighting each get thousands of searches a month. One "Services" page cannot rank for all of them.

  2. Service pages for your core towns

Searches like "yard cleanup tualatin" are how Otter Landscapes reached #1 in Maps. Pick the towns you most want work in, and write about real jobs there.

  3. Project gallery with before-and-after photos

Homeowners hire on what they can see. Tag each project with the service and the town, so the gallery supports both pages.

  4. Seasonal cleanup pages

Spring cleanup peaks in March and April, leaf removal in November. Publish each page six to eight weeks ahead so it ranks in time.

  5. Cost guides for big-ticket jobs

People search "retaining wall cost" and "paver patio cost" before they call anyone. Price ranges and what changes the price bring in buyers who are ready to spend.

  6. Maintenance plans page

Landscape maintenance and commercial landscaping searches lead to recurring contracts that keep crews busy through the slow months.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for landscapers

Primary category
Landscaper
Secondary categories
Lawn care serviceLandscape designerLawn sprinkler system contractorTree serviceSnow removal service

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Choose your primary category by where most of your revenue comes from. Use Landscaper for design and installation work, and Lawn care service if mowing and maintenance pay the bills. Of the 20 most-reviewed US landscaping profiles, half chose Lawn care service.
  • If you work at customers' homes, set a service area and list the towns you actually cover, rather than showing a street address.
  • Upload photos from finished jobs every week in season, and mention the service and town in the description.
  • Add seasonal services as they start, such as snow removal in winter, so your profile matches what people search for that month.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for landscapers

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Angi
  • Houzz
  • Thumbtack
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Landscapers can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Landscaping services
  • The Google Verified badge is available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are available while verification is pending.
  • Booking leads are available.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Home & Home Improvement category average $90.92 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes landscapers make

  1. Starting SEO in spring

By April, demand is near its peak and new pages have not had time to rank. Build them in autumn or winter so they are ready when the phones start ringing.

  2. Choosing the wrong primary category

Your primary Google Business Profile category decides which searches you show up for. A design-build company listed as Lawn care service loses patio and retaining wall leads, and the other way round.

  3. Using stock photos

Homeowners can spot stock images, and they say nothing about your work. Real before-and-after photos win more calls and give each project page something unique.

  4. One page for every town

Listing twenty towns on one page ranks for none of them. Start with dedicated pages for the three to five towns you most want work in.

FAQ

Landscaping SEO questions

When should a landscaping company start SEO?

Start in autumn or winter. Landscaping searches in the US peak in April and May at roughly three times the December low, and new pages usually need two to four months to rank well. Work done in the quiet months means your site is already showing up when homeowners start planning spring projects.

Should my Google Business Profile say Landscaper or Lawn care service?

Pick the one that matches most of your revenue, then add the other as a secondary category. Design, installation and hardscaping companies should use Landscaper. Mowing and maintenance companies often do better with Lawn care service, which half of the 20 most-reviewed US landscaping profiles use as their primary category.

How much does SEO cost for a landscaping company?

It depends on how many towns and services you want to rank for, how competitive your area is, and what state your website is in. Most landscapers pay monthly, because seasonal pages, reviews and project photos need steady work. I look at your site and local competitors first, then give you a fixed quote.

Do I need a separate page for every town I serve?

Not for every town. Start with the three to five towns you most want work in and give each a page about real jobs there, with photos. Thin pages that only swap the town name rarely rank, and Google can treat them as spam. Add more towns once the first pages are working.

Is SEO still worth it now that Google shows AI answers?

Yes for local services. When someone searches for a landscaper near them, Google still shows the map results and local businesses, and AI answers pull from the same Google Business Profiles, reviews and websites. A strong profile and clear service pages help you show up in both places.
