Aaron's take

Periodontists have an awareness problem. "Periodontist" gets around 110,000 searches a month in the US, but many of the related searches are basic: what is a periodontist, what does a periodontist do, how much does one cost. Patients often arrive confused, sometimes worried, after a referral from their dentist.

The practices I saw do well explained gum disease and treatment in plain language, without scaring people. Pages for deep cleaning, gum grafts, implants and periodontal disease, a clear explanation of what a periodontist does compared with a general dentist, and an easy path for referring dentists. Most of the busiest periodontists also list Dental implants periodontist, so implants deserve their own pages.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. What a periodontist does page

Many searches are basic questions. A clear explanation captures them and reassures referred patients.

  2. Gum disease page

Explain signs, stages and treatment without fear tactics.

  3. Deep cleaning page

About 14,800 searches a month. Explain scaling and root planing and why it is needed.

  4. Gum graft page

A common procedure with cost and recovery questions.

  5. Dental implants page

Eight of the 10 most-reviewed periodontists list Dental implants periodontist. Implants are a key service.

  6. Referring dentists page

Make referrals easy and explain how you report back.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for periodontists

Primary category

Secondary categories

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Periodontist as your primary category. Eight of the 10 most-reviewed US periodontists I checked added Dental implants periodontist.
  • Add Dental implants provider as well if implants are a major part of your work.
  • Create profiles for each doctor where Google allows it.
  • Never confirm in a review reply that the reviewer is your patient. Thank them without mentioning treatment details.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for periodontists

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Healthgrades
  • Yelp
  • US News Health
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Periodontists can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Dentists & Dental Services category average $72.97 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes periodontists make

  1. Assuming patients know what you do

Many search "what is a periodontist". Explain it simply on your site.

  2. Scary gum disease content

Fear tactics put people off. Explain plainly and focus on treatment.

  3. Underselling implants

Implants are a key service for most top periodontists. Give them proper pages.

  4. Revealing patient details in review replies

Confirming that a reviewer is a patient can break US privacy rules. Keep replies general.

FAQ

Periodontist SEO questions

What do people search for about periodontists?

"Periodontist" gets about 110,000 searches a month in the US, and many related searches are basic questions such as what a periodontist is and what one costs. A clear page explaining the specialty, gum disease and treatments catches those patients and reassures referred ones.

Why should periodontists promote dental implants?

Because implants are a central service for most busy periodontists. Eight of the 10 most-reviewed US periodontists I checked list Dental implants periodontist on their Google profile. Dedicated implant pages compete for high-value searches. Explain who is a good candidate, how long treatment takes and what it costs.

How should a periodontist talk about gum disease online?

Plainly and calmly. Explain the signs, stages and treatment options without fear tactics, and say what happens at a first visit. Patients who understand their condition are more likely to book and to follow through with treatment. Real explanations also build trust with the dentists who refer to you.

How can periodontists get more referrals through their website?

Add a referring dentists page with a simple referral form, how quickly you see patients and how you report back. Many periodontal patients come through referrals, so making the dentist's side easy matters as much as the patient pages. Thank-you notes and quick reports keep referring dentists coming back.

How much does SEO cost for a periodontal practice?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many treatments and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most periodontists, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
