Aaron's take

Commercial construction SEO looks nothing like home services. Search volumes are small, and much of the interest in "commercial construction" comes from people researching jobs, loans and insurance. The clients that matter, developers, property managers and business owners, search less and research harder.

What wins those clients is proof. Project pages with the building type, size, schedule and budget outcome, a clear list of sectors you build for, safety and bonding information, and the people who run the jobs. The firms I have seen grow online treat their website like a capability statement that happens to rank.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each sector you build for

Retail, restaurants, offices, industrial and healthcare clients search for builders with experience in their sector.

  2. Project case studies

Each with building type, size, schedule and outcome. Commercial clients choose on proof.

  3. Tenant improvement page

A steady source of work. Explain how you handle fit-outs in occupied buildings.

  4. Design-build and construction management pages

Different delivery methods suit different clients. Explain each and when it fits.

  5. Safety and bonding page

Owners and developers check safety records, bonding capacity and insurance before shortlisting.

  6. Team page

Clients hire the people who will run their job. Show project managers and superintendents with their experience.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for commercial construction firms

Primary category
General contractor
Secondary categories

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Google has no category for commercial construction. Most commercial firms use General contractor or Construction company as their primary category.
  • Add trade categories only for work your own crews do, such as Concrete contractor.
  • Upload photos of completed buildings and projects under way, with the building type in the description.
  • Ask clients for reviews at project close-out. Even a few detailed reviews stand out in a category with few.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for commercial construction firms

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • BBB
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Commercial Construction Firms can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Industrial & Commercial category average $75.19 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Structured data

Add this to your home page, filled in with your details, so search engines and AI tools know exactly what your business is, where it is and how to reach you. It uses the GeneralContractor type.

Mistakes

Mistakes commercial construction firms make

  1. Treating it like home services

Commercial clients search less and research more. They need proof and capability, not urgency.

  2. Photos without data

A building photo alone tells a developer little. Add the type, size, schedule and outcome.

  3. No sector pages

Clients look for builders who know their kind of building. Sector pages show that experience.

  4. Hiding safety and bonding

These are shortlisting criteria. If they are not on your site, you may not make the list.

FAQ

Commercial Construction SEO questions

Is SEO worth it for commercial construction firms?

Yes, but it works differently. Search volumes are small, and much of the interest in commercial construction comes from people researching jobs and loans. The value is in ranking for sector and project searches, and in having a site that convinces a shortlist of serious clients.

What should a commercial construction website show?

Sector pages, detailed project case studies with building type, size, schedule and outcome, delivery methods such as design-build, safety and bonding information, and the team who runs jobs. Commercial clients choose on proof, so data matters more than slogans. Every page should make it easy to request a capability statement or start a conversation.

Which Google Business Profile category should a commercial builder use?

Google has no commercial construction category. Most firms use General contractor or Construction company as their primary category, then add trade categories only for work their own crews do, such as concrete. Keep the profile description focused on the sectors and project sizes you take on.

Do reviews matter for commercial construction?

They matter less than for home services, but they still count. Few commercial builders have many reviews, so even a handful of detailed ones from clients stands out, and they appear when prospects search your name. Ask for them at close-out, when the client relationship is strongest.

How much does SEO cost for a commercial construction firm?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many sectors and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most commercial construction firms, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
