Aaron's take

Independent hotels compete with online travel agencies for their own guests. "Hotels near me" gets around 11 million searches a month in the US, and specific searches matter too: boutique hotel at about 90,500, pet friendly hotels at about 90,500 and bed and breakfast near me at about 40,500. Every direct booking saves the commission paid to a booking site.

The hotels that win online make direct booking easy and fast, show real photos of rooms and amenities, write pages for nearby attractions and events, and give guests a reason to book direct, such as the best rate or a perk. Reviews and replies to them influence bookings heavily. Several of the most-reviewed hotels I checked also list wedding venue or spa on their profile.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Direct booking page

Fast booking with the best rate saves commission.

  2. Room pages

Show each room type with real photos.

  3. Local guide pages

Attractions and events bring travellers planning trips.

  4. Pet friendly page, if allowed

    About 90,500 searches a month.

  5. Events and weddings page, if hosted

    Higher-value bookings.

  6. Offers page

Give guests a reason to book direct.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for hotels and inns

Primary category
Hotel
Secondary categories
Resort hotelWedding venueSpaConference center

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Hotel as your primary category. The most-reviewed US hotels I checked added categories for their extra services, such as Casino, Wedding venue or Spa.
  • Add amenities and accessibility details in your profile.
  • Reply to every review, thanking guests and addressing problems.
  • Link your profile to your direct booking engine.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for hotels and inns

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Tripadvisor
  • Booking.com
  • Expedia
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Hotels And Inns can't use Local Services Ads, so paid search means Google Ads. Ads bring leads within days but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working. Most businesses run ads for the most valuable searches while SEO grows, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

For context, Google search ads in the Travel category average $44.70 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Add this to your home page, filled in with your details, so search engines and AI tools know exactly what your business is, where it is and how to reach you. It uses the Hotel type.

Mistakes

Mistakes hotels and inns make

  1. Slow booking engine

Guests leave for booking sites. Make direct booking fast.

  2. No reason to book direct

Offer the best rate or a perk.

  3. Ignoring reviews

Reply to all reviews. Future guests read them.

  4. No local content

Guides to the area bring planning travellers.

FAQ

Hotel SEO questions

How can an independent hotel get more direct bookings?

With a fast booking engine, a clear reason to book direct, and strong local content. "Hotels near me" gets about 11 million searches a month in the US. Direct bookings save the commission paid to booking sites, so every one counts.

Can hotels use Local Services Ads?

No. Hotel is not on Google's US Local Services Ads list. Regular Google Ads are the paid option, while SEO, reviews and a complete Google Business Profile bring in customers without a cost per click, and keep working when ad budgets are paused.

Should hotels write local guides?

Yes. Travellers search for things to do and events before they choose where to stay. Guides to nearby attractions, restaurants and events bring them to your site early and give you the chance to win a direct booking. Update them when new events are announced.

How important are hotel reviews?

Very. Guests read reviews on Google and travel sites before booking, and they notice how you reply. Thank guests, address problems calmly and invite happy guests to leave a review. A steady flow of recent reviews helps your hotel rank in local results too.

How much does SEO cost for a hotel?

That comes down to three things: the competition where you work, how many rooms and locations you want to target, and the state of your website today. For most hotels, a monthly arrangement works best, because local rankings build over time. I start by looking at your site and your rivals, then send a fixed quote.
