Aaron's take

Restaurants have the largest local searches there are. "Restaurants near me" gets around 100 million searches a month in the US and "food near me" about 68 million, and most of those decisions happen on the Google map, not on a website. "Brunch near me" alone gets about 2.2 million.

The restaurants that win online treat their Google Business Profile as their main shop window: accurate hours, a current menu, many recent photos, and replies to reviews. The website supports it with a fast menu page, online ordering or reservations, and pages for private dining and events. Searches peak in July and are lowest in January.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. Fast menu page

The most visited page. Make it quick to read on a phone.

  2. Online ordering or reservations page

Let customers order or book directly.

  3. Private dining and events page

Higher-value bookings with their own searches.

  4. Catering page, if offered

    Brings in larger orders.

  5. Brunch or specials pages

Brunch near me alone gets millions of searches.

  6. Location and parking page

    Help diners find you easily.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for restaurants

Primary category
Restaurant
Secondary categories
American restaurantBarSeafood restaurantSteak house

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use your cuisine as the primary category where one fits, such as Seafood restaurant or Steak house. The most-reviewed US restaurants I checked added cuisine and Bar categories.
  • Keep hours, holiday hours and the menu up to date.
  • Post new food photos every week.
  • Reply to reviews, especially critical ones, calmly and quickly.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for restaurants

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Yelp
  • Tripadvisor
  • OpenTable
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Restaurants can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Restaurant
  • The Google Verified badge is not available for this category.
  • Pre-badge ads are available while verification is pending.
  • Booking leads are available.

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Restaurants & Food category average $30.57 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes restaurants make

  1. Outdated menu or hours

Diners turn up to closed doors or old prices and leave bad reviews.

  2. Few photos

Diners choose by photos on the map.

  3. Ignoring reviews

Replies show you care, and diners read them.

  4. Slow menu page

A PDF menu that will not load on a phone loses customers.

FAQ

Restaurant SEO questions

How do people choose a restaurant online?

Mostly on the Google map. In the US, "restaurants near me" gets about 100 million searches a month. Diners look at photos, ratings, hours and the menu in your Google Business Profile, so keeping it accurate and active matters more than anything on your website.

Can restaurants use Local Services Ads?

Restaurant is a US Local Services Ads category under dining. The Google Verified badge is not offered for dining categories, so ratings, photos and quick replies to reviews matter even more. Ads work best alongside a strong profile. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

What should a restaurant website include?

A fast, readable menu, online ordering or reservations, opening hours, location and parking, and pages for private dining or events. Avoid PDF menus that load slowly on phones. The website supports your Google profile and turns interest into orders and bookings.

How important are photos for restaurants?

Very. Diners choose by what the food and space look like. Post new photos of dishes, drinks and the dining room every week, and encourage customers to add theirs. A profile with many recent photos stands out on the map.

How much does SEO cost for a restaurant?

It depends on how competitive your area is, how many menus and locations you want to rank for and what your website needs first. Most restaurants pay monthly, because new pages, reviews and local work need steady attention. I look at your site and the competitors near you first, then give you a fixed quote.
