Aaron's take

Real estate agents cannot win the biggest real estate searches. "Homes for sale" gets around 368,000 searches a month in the US, and large listing portals own those results. Much of the interest in "real estate agent" itself is about careers and licensing.

The agents who win online go where the portals are weak: their own neighbourhoods and their sellers. A page for each area they know deeply, a home valuation page for "how much is my home worth", guides for first-time buyers and sellers, and reviews on Google and the agent review sites. Local knowledge, written well, is the one thing a portal cannot copy.

Your website

Pages your website needs

In the order I would build them. Each page targets one group of searches.

  1. A page for each neighbourhood you know

Local knowledge is what portals cannot copy. Cover homes, prices, schools and amenities factually.

  2. Home valuation page

"How much is my home worth" brings in sellers, the most valuable leads.

  3. First-time buyer guide

About 33,100 searches a month. A helpful guide builds trust with buyers early.

  4. Selling process page

Explain how you price, market and sell a home, and what sellers can expect.

  5. Reviews and results page

Show recent sales and client reviews. Buyers and sellers compare agents on track record.

  6. About page

Clients choose a person. Show your experience, areas and how you work.

How I plan and build sites like this

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile for real estate agents

Primary category
Real estate agent
Secondary categories
Real estate agencyReal estate consultant

Categories checked on October 13, 2026

What to get right

  • Use Real estate agent as your primary category. Nine of the 10 most-reviewed US agents I checked added Real estate agency, and 5 added Real estate consultant.
  • Keep your service area to the neighbourhoods you really know.
  • Post photos of recent listings and sales, with the neighbourhood in the description.
  • Ask every buyer and seller for a review at closing, on Google and on an agent review site.

Reviews

Reviews that matter for real estate agents

Where reviews count

  • Google
  • Zillow
  • Rate-My-Agent
  • FastExpert
  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, right after the job is done.
  • Send one short message with a direct link, so leaving a review takes a single tap.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and specifically.
  • Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. It breaks Google's rules.

Ads and SEO

Local Services Ads, Google Ads and SEO

Real Estate Agents can advertise with Local Services Ads, the "Google Verified" ads that sit above everything else for many local searches. You pay per lead, not per click.

  • Google category: Real estate agents and brokers

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, starting with a first US phase in August 2026.

Ads and SEO work best together. Ads buy leads while your organic and map rankings grow, and strong reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help both. As SEO brings in more leads for free, you can lower ad spend on the searches you already win.

For context, Google search ads in the Real Estate category average $102.51 per lead (LocaliQ, 2026). That is a search ads benchmark, not a Local Services Ads lead price.

Mistakes

Mistakes real estate agents make

  1. Competing with listing portals

Portals own "homes for sale". Win with neighbourhood content and seller pages instead.

  2. Generic area descriptions

Copy that could describe any town adds nothing. Write about what you know locally, and keep it factual.

  3. Ignoring sellers

Sellers are the most valuable leads. A valuation page and selling guide bring them in.

  4. Reviews in only one place

Clients check Google and agent review sites. Ask for reviews on both.

FAQ

Real Estate SEO questions

Can a real estate agent compete with Zillow on Google?

Not for broad searches like "homes for sale", which portals dominate. Agents win with what portals cannot do well: detailed neighbourhood pages, home valuation pages for sellers and helpful guides. "Realtor near me" also gets about 90,500 searches a month, and that is won through the Google Business Profile.

Can real estate agents use Local Services Ads?

Real estate agents and brokers is one of Google's US Local Services Ads categories, under professional services. These follow their own screening and badge rules, so check the requirements for your brokerage. Ads work best alongside SEO and strong reviews. Google says these ads are ranked on factors such as your distance from the customer, your reviews and how quickly you respond to leads.

What pages should a real estate agent's website have?

Neighbourhood pages for the areas you know, a home valuation page, buyer and seller guides, a page showing recent sales and reviews, and an about page. Keep neighbourhood descriptions factual, focused on homes, prices and amenities, to stay within fair housing rules.

When do people search for real estate agents?

In the US, searches are highest from March to May and lowest in December, with a swing of about 1.3 times. Pages should be ranking by the start of the year.

How much does SEO cost for a real estate agent?

There is no single price. The main factors are your local competition, the number of neighbourhoods you want to show up for, and how much your current site needs fixing. Monthly work suits most real estate agents, since rankings keep improving with new content and reviews. I give a fixed quote after reviewing your site and competitors.
