Local SEO Checklist: 40 Things to Check on Your Business

By Aaron CarmenUpdated August 26, 20263 min read

Quick answer

Use this local SEO checklist as a self-audit. It covers 40 checks in six areas: your Google Business Profile, reviews, your website, citations and links, tracking, and AI search. Work through it top to bottom, because the early items, like a verified and complete Business Profile, usually make the biggest difference fastest. Tick items off on the page or download it.

This local SEO checklist is a self-audit you can do in an afternoon. It covers 40 checks across six areas, in the order I’d work through them for any local business. Tick items off as you go (ticks aren’t saved, so download the printable text version if you want to work through it over several days).

Each section links to a full guide if you need the how-to.

1. Google Business Profile

Google says verified businesses are more likely to show up in local results, and that complete, accurate profiles are more likely to appear. Start here.

How to use the results

Once you’ve been through the list, you’ll have a set of unticked items. Don’t try to fix them all at once. Prioritize in this order:

  1. Anything that breaks Google’s guidelines, like a keyword-stuffed business name or a virtual office address. These can get your profile suspended.
  2. Gaps in your Business Profile: verification, categories, missing details.
  3. A system for reviews, because it compounds every month.
  4. Missing service pages on your website.
  5. Citations, links and AI search, which take steady effort over time.

For the reasoning behind this order, read my local SEO guide for small businesses, and for going further, how to rank higher on Google Maps.

If you’d rather hand the audit and the fixes to someone else, that’s what my local SEO service does.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I do a local SEO audit?

Work through a checklist like this one, starting with your Google Business Profile, then reviews, website, citations, tracking and AI search. Note everything that's missing or wrong, then fix the items that affect relevance and trust first. An audit is only useful if it ends in a short, prioritized list of fixes.

How often should I go through a local SEO checklist?

Do a full pass once, then check the profile, reviews and tracking sections monthly and the whole list every few months. Recheck after any big change, such as moving, rebranding, adding a service or launching a new website, because those are when details fall out of sync.

Which local SEO checks matter most?

The ones Google names directly: a verified, complete and accurate Business Profile, the right categories, genuine reviews, and a website that clearly explains your services. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, so start with whatever improves relevance and prominence first.
